In the '70s, country & western was full of artists referred to as outlaws, mavericks world Health Organization bucked the stodgy Nashville music establishment by piece of writing their have songs, recording with their road bands, and producing their have records. The genre produced a cut of acts of the Apostles, simply Amarillo, TX, native Joe Ely epitomized the form. Unlike most of that era's vainglorious name calling, Ely remained a viable creative person. He got his start back up in the early '70s, functional with Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore in a chemical group called the Flatlanders. Their only record album didn't go far, and the group skint up. (Rounder reissued the record album in 1990.) Around the mid-'70s, Ely formed an eclecticist group that was able to swing from Cajun and western to honkie tonk stomps and rockabilly; they were signed to MCA in 1977. Ely released an eponymic debut that class, victimisation songs written by ex-Flatlanders Gilmore and Butch Hancock and throwing in some of his possess road-worn, oddly poetic originals. The side by side yr brought Honkey Tonk Masquerade, the cornerstone of Ely's legacy and unitary of modernistic country's most ambitious albums. Further albums (especially Resilient Shots, recorded during his European turn with the Clash) brought Ely to the tending of stone fans and netted enraptured reviews in area and bulge magazines (simply, cryptically, produced no hits). MCA dropped Ely in 1983, and he woodshedded until 1987, when the sovereign Hightone label signed him and released Nobleman of the Highway. Another Hightone album followed before Ely (whose influence was existence matt-up by the new spawn of land neo-traditionalists) re-signed with MCA, releasing some other live set and Love & Danger. Twistin' in the Wind followed in 1998, and Live at Antone's arrived two years later along with MCA Nashville's Topper Of compendium. Ely remained an up-and-coming and passionate live performer and an on occasion inspired songster, releasing Streets of Sin in 2003 on Rounder Records and entry his possess mark, Rack'em Records, with 2007's Happy Songs from Rattlesnake Gulch.

Star Trek - Takei Picks Up Marriage License On Landmark Day

Former STAR TREK actor GEORGE TAKEI is "beyond delighted" to have obtained a marriage license - becoming one of the first homosexuals to pick up the historic document in California on Tuesday (17Jun08).

The star announced his plans to wed longtime partner Brad Altman the day after new legislation overturned a ban on same-sex marriages in the state last month (15May08).

Takei received his license from the City of West Hollywood on Tuesday morning, when the gay marriage ban was officially lifted.

And he is overjoyed to have finally been granted equal marriage rights to everyone else.

He tells People.com, "We are first and foremost beyond delighted! It's a landmark day.

"I started singing One Singular Sensation (after getting the license). (Brad) said, 'I love you' and I looked at him and said, 'I love you.'"

The couple plan to wed on 14 September (08).

Young Voters Broke Records In 2008 Primary Season, Nearly Doubling Turnout From 2000

The phenomenon was evident as early as the Iowa caucuses, and it proved to be a trend by Super Tuesday, but now that primary season is over, it's official: Young voters turned out in record numbers, casting a 6.5 million votes. This year's percentage of young voters was nearly double the turnout in 2000 (in the states that collected youth voting data in 2000), according to figures compiled by the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement (CIRCLE).

The combination of a hotly contested Democratic primary between Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and the from-the-depths surge to the top by Senator John McCain no doubt helped increase interest in the race among voters under age 30. The more than 6 million votes cast is a dramatic increase in youth voter turnout compared to the 2000 election and marks the first time the youth vote has risen in three consecutive election cycles since the voting age was lowered to 18 in 1971, according to CIRCLE.

"This primary season, the Millennials have gone to the polls in record numbers, showing they are an influential voting bloc in American politics," CIRCLE director Peter Levine said. "They realize what's at stake and the impact this election will have on their future and the future of our country."

Compared to 2000, when 9 percent of youth voters cast ballots in the primaries, in 2008, national youth-voter turnout was 17 percent (CIRCLE could not compare the vote in all states because many states did not do exit polling on youth vote in 2000 and 2004). In a sign of how the youth vote was up across the board, of the 17 states in which exit polls were conducted in 2000, 16 had increases in youth vote, with some seeing a tripling or quadrupling of numbers.

Among young Democrats, Obama was the candidate of choice, raking in the support of 60 percent of young voters overall and a majority in 32 of the 40 states. On the Republican side, though, the picture was less clear, with McCain (34 percent) barely edging out former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (31 percent) and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (25 percent).

The numbers fit with national focus-group figures CIRCLE collected last fall, in which college students said they were deeply concerned about issues and ready to consider voting, as long as political leaders kept it on a positive tip and addressed real problems.

What do these numbers mean for the general election, now that the excitement over primaries has cooled?

"All key indicators and trends point to a predicted record turnout of young people voting this coming November," Levine said. "Now it's up to the candidates to run campaigns that address the real issues and concerns that young Americans care about, rather than the negative mudslinging tactics that have turned off young voters in the past."

Often considered one of grindcore's innovation fathers, Carcass were among the number one bands of the utmost alloy musical style to try a different lyrical attack -- one that reflected a fascination with surgical gadgets and peculiar words straight out of a mEd student's school text. Hailing from the same locale that spawned the Fab Four -- in case you lived under a rock for the past tense few decades, Liverpool -- Carcass were originally formed in 1985 by singer/guitarist Bill Steer (wHO would later play with Napalm Death) and drummer Ken Owen. By 1987, singer/bassist Jeff Walker had sign-language on with the band, resulting in a deal with Earache Records concisely later. The triple then issued a pair of full-lengths that ar often considered classics of the grindcore genre, 1988's Reek of Putrefaction and 1989's Symphonies of Sickness.

Concisely later the dawn of the '90s, Carcass expanded to a quartette, as Michael Amott sign-language on as second guitarist, resulting in deuce more favorites of the metal subway system, 1991's Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious and 1992's four-song EP Tools of the Trade. Whereas he once sang in a growl voice à la a dragon desperately in want of some Pepto-Bismol, Walker adoptive a somewhat more traditional metallic element tattle style, piece the lot was no longer afraid to allow Iron Maiden-esque guitar form accede the mix. The result was the group's major-label debut for Sony, 1994's Heartwork. Although Heartwork is probably Carcass' best-known album, fan response is often split evenly 'tween those world Health Organization sense the group had sold stunned with a more easily digestible well-grounded (quite comparable to thresh metal) and those wHO feel that it's one of the '90s great alloy releases.

Either way, Amott left the group around this time, and was replaced by Carlo Regadas for Carcass' last studio album, 1996's appropriately titled Swansong. The same year, a compilation of rarities was issued, Arouse Up and Smell the Carcass. Subsequently, Owen, Walker, and Regadas continued working together for a write under the Blackstar nominate; Amott formed both Spiritual Beggars and Arch Enemy; and Steer surprisingly formed a blues-rock power threesome, Firebird.
